how does it work?
choose your colour family/tone:
What is the primary colour you’re seeking? Blues, pinks, greens… or perhaps a combo of two colours (primary/secondary)? Do you have a picture that inspires you and we can use it as a starting point? We use the strip quilting technique (jelly roll); if you find a pre-made jelly roll that you like, you are welcome to provide your own and the final price will be adjusted accordingly. Etsy is a good source for jelly rolls, but we can also recommend several online Canadian sources. While you’re drooling over fabric… don’t forget your binding and backing fabric! These important parts of the quilt can dramatically change the overall look. We can consult on this right off the top or perhaps you’re happier making a decision once the quilt top is complete.
choose your patchwork pattern:
This is the most eye-catching part of the quilt and the colours you’ve chosen will make each pattern unique. Click here to see your patchwork options, including associated final quilt dimensions. The patterns we offer are designed to show off their unique geometric shapes and therefore don’t necessarily fall into standard mattress dimensions. Most of our quilts are designed for snuggling up with on the couch or folding beautifully at the foot of your bed. You may add borders to each pattern to increase the size, but bear in mind this will alter the look of the finished product. To help you envision your final quilt sizing, consider the following mattress standards and associated coverlet sizes:
Twin Bed 38”x75” (plus 6” drop on all sides = 50”x87”)
Double Bed 54”x70” (plus 6” drop on all sides = 66”x 82”)
Queen Bed 60”x80” (plus 6” drop on all sides = 72”x 92”)
Choose your quilting design:
The actual “quilting” part of the blanket is the subtle stitched pattern holding all the layers of fabric and batting together. We send all our quilts out to be long-arm quilted by our friend Jen at Happy Wife Quilting. She has access to hundreds of digital quilt patterns! Choose whatever you like, but Jen also has a great eye for finding something that co-ordinates well with your patchwork design. www.happywifequilting.ca. Don’t forget to consider what colour of thread you want to use for your quilting design. The sky’s the limit! How much do you want your quilting pattern to stand out?
And that’s pretty much it! But we always finish your project off with a customized label, ideal for marking a special occasion.
